Cybex prams are beautifully engineered. The Priam, Gazelle, Balios, and Melio are some of the best-looking pushchairs on the market — and some of the most complicated to clean properly. The premium fabrics, intricate snap-button systems, and model-specific disassembly processes mean that what looks like a straightforward cleaning job can quickly go wrong if you do not know exactly what you are doing.

We clean Cybex prams every week. Priam, Gazelle, Balios, Melio, Beezy, Libelle — we have stripped down and reassembled every model in the current range. This guide explains what is involved, where things go wrong, and why the majority of Cybex owners who contact us have already tried cleaning at home and were not happy with the result.

Why Cybex prams need careful cleaning

Cybex uses premium fabrics with specific care requirements that differ from brands like Bugaboo or UPPAbaby. Three things make Cybex prams particularly tricky to clean:

Which model do you have?

Before you attempt any cleaning, you need to know exactly which Cybex pram you have. This is not as obvious as it sounds — Cybex updates their models frequently, and a 2022 Priam is not identical to a 2024 Priam.

ModelTypePrice RangeCleaning Complexity
PriamPremium travel system£950–1,400High — multiple snap points, velcro, elastic straps
Gazelle SDouble/single convertible£700–1,000High — dual seat configuration adds complexity
Balios S LuxMid-range all-terrain£400–600Medium — similar to Priam but fewer attachment points
MelioLightweight city£500–700Medium — lighter fabric, simpler attachment
BeezyCompact city buggy£250–350Lower — fewer components, simpler fold
LibelleUltra-compact travel£200–280Lower — minimal fabric, quick removal

The Priam and Gazelle are the most complex to clean. The Beezy and Libelle are the simplest. If you have a Priam or Gazelle and have never removed the fabrics before, read the rest of this guide carefully before you start.

What goes wrong when parents clean a Cybex at home

We hear the same stories repeatedly from Cybex owners who have attempted home cleaning:

Water stains on the upholstery. This is the most common problem — and the most frustrating because it can happen even when you follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly. The Cybex manual states that fabrics are machine washable at 30°C on a gentle cycle. What it also says, in smaller print, is that water can permeate through seams and leave stains. Parents wash the fabric, it comes out with watermarks, and no amount of re-washing removes them. The stains are caused by residue from the fabric treatment migrating to the surface — once they appear, they are extremely difficult to reverse without specialist knowledge.

Cracked snap buttons. The hidden snap buttons on the Priam and Gazelle are small plastic fasteners. They are designed to be pressed open from a specific angle. Parents who cannot find them — or who force them from the wrong direction — crack the plastic. A cracked snap means the fabric no longer sits flush against the frame, and Cybex replacement parts can take weeks to arrive and are not cheap.

Velcro degradation. Several Cybex models use velcro strips to hold fabric sections in place. If these go through a washing machine — especially at anything above 30°C — the hooks lose their grip. The velcro still looks fine but no longer holds the fabric securely. You only discover this when the fabric shifts and bunches during use.

Canopy damage from machine washing. The Cybex canopy must be hand washed. It is not machine washable, despite the seat fabric being machine-safe. We regularly see canopies that have been through a washing machine — the internal structure warps, the fabric puckers, and the canopy no longer sits smoothly on the frame. Once the canopy structure is distorted, it cannot be restored to its original shape.

Mould from inadequate drying. The seat pad on models like the Priam has internal padding that absorbs water and takes a long time to dry. Cybex explicitly warn against storing the pram in a damp environment. If you reassemble the pram before the padding is completely dry — or fold it for storage while any dampness remains — mould develops inside the padding where it is invisible until it starts to smell.

Fabric removal: model by model

Cybex Priam

The Priam has the most complex fabric removal process in the Cybex range. It involves:

Each step requires knowing exactly where the attachment points are. The snap buttons are deliberately recessed and colour-matched to the frame — they are designed to be invisible, not easy to find. If you have never done this before, photograph every step as you go. Getting it back together without a reference is where most parents get stuck.

Cybex Gazelle S

The Gazelle adds another layer of complexity: it can run as a single or double pushchair, with multiple seat configurations. Each configuration has a different fabric layout. The upper and lower seat units have different attachment systems, and the carrycot fabric (if you use one) removes differently again. If you are cleaning a Gazelle that runs in double mode, you are effectively cleaning two separate seat units — doubling the number of snap buttons, velcro strips, and elastic straps you need to deal with.

Cybex Balios S Lux

The Balios is similar to the Priam in its fabric attachment but with slightly fewer snap points. The canopy detaches by unsnapping buttons along the edge and releasing clamps on either side. The front fabric pulls forward to reveal shoulder strap buckles. The main difference from the Priam is the button positioning — they are in different locations, which is why following a Priam tutorial for a Balios leads to confusion and potential damage.

Cybex Melio, Beezy, and Libelle

The lighter models are simpler. The Beezy canopy unsnaps and unclips relatively easily. The Libelle has minimal fabric to remove. The Melio sits somewhere between the Balios and Beezy in terms of complexity. But even on these simpler models, the canopy must still be hand washed separately — machine washing is not safe for any Cybex canopy.

The canopy problem

Every Cybex model shares the same canopy care rule: hand wash only, with mild detergent, in warm water at 30°C. No machine. No tumble dry. No direct sunlight when drying. No ironing.

This is the component most commonly damaged during home cleaning, because parents assume that if the seat fabric is machine washable, the canopy must be too. It is not. The canopy has a different internal structure — on the Priam and Gazelle it includes a rigid brow piece and internal stiffening — that cannot withstand the agitation of a washing machine. Machine washing warps the structure, and once warped, the canopy never sits properly again.

Hand washing a canopy properly is also not as simple as dipping it in soapy water. The fabric needs to be cleaned without saturating the internal components. This requires careful technique — dampening the surface with a cloth rather than submerging the whole piece, working the detergent into stained areas without soaking through to the structure, and drying flat with adequate airflow.

Frame, wheels, and fold mechanism

The Cybex frame is aluminium with a painted or anodised finish. Cybex are explicit: do not use abrasives. Use a damp cloth and mild detergent only. Abrasive cleaners scratch the finish, and once scratched, the exposed aluminium oxidises and develops a chalky white residue that cannot be polished out.

The wheels on models like the Priam feature all-wheel suspension — more moving parts means more places for dirt, sand, and hair to accumulate. The rear wheels on the Priam are large and foam-filled, which makes them durable but also means debris works its way into the hub area. Clean wheels with a dry brush first, then a damp cloth. Never use water directly on the wheel bearings — it displaces the lubricant and causes rust and stiffness.

The fold mechanism on Cybex prams is engineered for one-hand operation, which means tight tolerances and precise joints. Over months of use, food crumbs, sand, and dried liquids work their way into these joints. This causes the fold to stiffen, the locking mechanism to jam, and the one-hand fold to require two hands and some swearing. Cleaning the fold mechanism properly requires partially disassembling it — something we do professionally but do not recommend at home.

Harness and buckles

The five-point harness on a Cybex pram must never be submerged in water. The webbing is load-bearing — it is what prevents your child from being ejected in an impact. Machine washing or soaking weakens the fibres over time. The metal or plastic buckle mechanisms can corrode or jam if water gets inside.

Wipe the straps with a damp cloth only. For heavy soiling — dried milk, food residue, sweat stains — a damp cloth is often not enough to get the straps genuinely clean. This is one of the main reasons parents contact us: the harness is visibly dirty, smells, and they do not know how to clean it safely. A professional clean addresses this without compromising the harness integrity.

Drying: where most damage happens

The single most important instruction from Cybex — more important than the washing temperature or the detergent — is this: do not store the pram in a damp environment. Mildew forms on damp fabric and padding, and once it takes hold inside the seat pad foam, it is extremely difficult to remove.

After washing, the fabric needs to air dry completely. Not mostly dry. Not dry to the touch on the surface. Completely dry — including the internal padding, the velcro strips, and the elastic straps. In a UK home without direct sunlight or forced airflow, this can take 24–48 hours.

Do not dry Cybex fabrics on a radiator — the direct heat can shrink the material and cause the water stain issue described above. Do not tumble dry. Do not iron. Air dry flat, in a well-ventilated room, away from direct heat and sunlight. Press the padding gently with a clean towel to extract moisture before laying flat.

And critically — do not reassemble or fold the pram until everything is bone dry. A folded damp Cybex is a mould incubator.

Frequently asked questions

Can you machine wash Cybex pram fabrics?

The seat fabric is machine washable at 30°C on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. However, Cybex warn that water can permeate through seams and leave stains on the upholstery — a risk that increases with darker colourways. The canopy must be hand washed only. Never tumble dry, iron, or expose to direct sunlight when drying.

How do you remove the fabric from a Cybex Priam?

Turn the seat on its side and unsnap the hidden buttons underneath and around the edge. Pull the front fabric forward to reveal shoulder strap connectors at the back — these slide off metal connectors rather than unclip. Undo the velcro strips underneath the base pad and detach the elastic straps at the lower back. The process is different on the Gazelle, Balios, and Melio — do not follow a Priam tutorial for a different model.

Can Cybex pram fabrics get water stains?

Yes. This is documented in the Cybex product manual. When the fabric is very wet, water can permeate the lining through bottom edges and seams, leaving visible marks on the upholstery. These stains are caused by the fabric treatment residue migrating to the surface and are extremely difficult to remove once they appear.

Is the Cybex canopy machine washable?

No. The canopy must be hand washed with mild detergent in warm water at 30°C. Machine washing warps the internal structure — particularly the rigid brow piece and stiffening elements on the Priam and Gazelle. Once warped, the canopy cannot be restored to its original shape.
