Pushchairs endure everything — rain, mud, spilled snacks, sticky fingers, and the daily grind of pavements and parks. This quick guide covers how to clean your pushchair at home, section by section, without damaging the fabric or frame.

What you need

Keep it simple: warm water, mild washing up liquid or baby-safe detergent, soft cloths, a soft-bristled brush, and an old toothbrush for crevices. Avoid bleach, antibacterial sprays, and pressure washers. These damage pushchair fabric and leave chemical residue where your child sits.

Cleaning the pushchair seat fabric

Check if your pushchair covers are removable — most modern pushchairs from Bugaboo, Silver Cross, iCandy, and UPPAbaby have removable seat units. If removable, check the washing label. Many can be machine washed at 30°C on a gentle cycle.

If covers aren’t removable, spot clean in place: dampen a cloth with soapy water, wring it out well, and work the fabric without saturating it. Saturating non-removable fabric pushes moisture into the padding underneath, which takes forever to dry and can cause mould.

For stubborn stains, bicarbonate of soda paste applied for 15 minutes before scrubbing works better than any commercial stain remover — and it’s completely baby-safe.

Hood and canopy

The hood gets dirty on both sides. Outside: rain marks, bird droppings, tree sap. Inside: your child touching it, condensation. Wipe the outside with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Clean the inside gently — inner fabrics are often softer and mark easily. If the hood has a clear window panel, wipe with a damp cloth only — no sprays, which cloud the plastic over time.

Frame and wheels

The frame collects grime, sticky residue, and crumbs in every joint and folding mechanism. Wipe the entire frame with a damp cloth. Use a toothbrush to get into crevices, hinges, and the underside of the seat where food falls.

Wheels are the most neglected part. Remove them if your pushchair has quick-release wheels. Cut tangled hair from the axles with scissors — this alone makes a dramatic difference to how smoothly the pushchair rolls. Scrub tyres with warm soapy water. Clean the wheel housings where the wheels attach. If wheels are stiff or the pushchair pulls to one side, dirty wheel bearings are usually the cause.

Harness and bumper bar

Never submerge pushchair harness straps in water. Like car seat straps, pushchair harness webbing is a safety component. Wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent only. Harness pads (the shoulder covers) usually slide off and can be hand washed.

The bumper bar collects sticky hand residue and dribble. Wipe with warm soapy water. If it has a fabric cover, remove and wash it. Clean the plastic or metal bar underneath.

Drying properly

This step matters more than most people think. A pushchair that’s reassembled damp will develop mould inside the padding within days — especially in the British climate. Air dry all fabric in a well-ventilated area, ideally outdoors. Don’t tumble dry unless the label says you can. Allow 24–48 hours for padded components to dry fully before reassembling.

When a home clean isn’t enough

Regular wiping and spot cleaning keeps your pushchair looking reasonable. But if you’re dealing with mould in the fabric, deep-set stains that won’t shift, musty smells from the padding, or you’re preparing the pushchair for a new baby or for resale — a professional pushchair clean is worth the investment. We strip everything down, deep clean with baby-safe products, and return it looking like new. From £75 with free collection and delivery across London.
