Joie car seats are some of the most popular in the UK — and for good reason. But the Every Stage, i-Spin 360, and Steadi models are notorious crumb traps, and the thick padding absorbs spills fast. Here’s how to clean each Joie model properly without damaging anything.

How to clean a Joie Every Stage

The Every Stage (and Every Stage FX) is designed to last from birth to 12 years. That’s a lot of years of spills. The multi-position recline and grow-with-your-child design means there are more fabric panels and padding layers than most car seats.

Cover removal: The Every Stage cover is held by elastic hooks around the back and clips at the base. You’ll need to unthread the harness straps through the cover — they route through slots that change position as you adjust the headrest height. Photograph the harness routing before you start. The newborn insert lifts out separately.

Washing: Joie recommend hand washing Every Stage covers in lukewarm water with mild detergent. Some parents machine wash at 30°C on a delicate cycle without issues — but the official recommendation is hand wash. No fabric softener, no tumble drying.

The recline mechanism: Food and drink run down into the recline mechanism over time. With the cover off, vacuum the recline joints and wipe with a damp cloth. Don’t spray water directly into any mechanical parts.

How to clean a Joie i-Spin 360

The i-Spin 360 rotates for easy access, which parents love — but the spin mechanism needs careful handling during cleaning.

Cover removal: Similar to the Every Stage — elastic hooks, base clips, and harness unthreading. The i-Spin has a one-piece cover that wraps around the seat. Look for the elastic hooks underneath the seat that anchor the cover to the base.

Washing: Hand wash recommended by Joie. Lukewarm water, mild detergent, no fabric softener.

The spin base: This is the critical part. Do not get water or cleaning products into the rotation mechanism. Wipe the base with a barely damp cloth. If crumbs are jammed in the spin joint, use a vacuum cleaner with a narrow nozzle attachment. The rotation should feel smooth after cleaning — if it’s stiff, crumbs are likely still in the mechanism.

Reassembly: Make sure the cover clips back into all the anchor points underneath. A loose cover can shift during use and affect how the seat performs.

How to clean a Joie Steadi

The Steadi is a more basic rear-facing seat. Simpler design means simpler cleaning.

Cover removal: Unthread harness, unhook elastic loops, lift off cover. The Steadi cover is more straightforward than the Every Stage.

Washing: Hand wash in lukewarm water. The Steadi fabric is thinner than the Every Stage, so it dries faster.

Shell: The Steadi shell is relatively open with fewer crevices than multi-stage seats. Vacuum and wipe down.

How to clean a Joie i-Snug (infant carrier)

The i-Snug is Joie’s infant carrier — the one that clicks onto the pushchair. It gets the milk-spit-up treatment from day one.

Cover removal: Unclip the hood/canopy first, then unhook the elastic loops holding the cover to the shell. Unthread the harness.

Washing: Hand wash the cover. The hood fabric is usually spot-clean only — check the label. Harness pads slide off and can be hand washed.

The carry handle and base: Wipe the carry handle and ISOFIX base with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Food gets into the handle pivot points — use a toothbrush.
